Concentrated energy is on tap from the ECFA trio. The groupıs Die Fäden is a freeform simulation where the group interacts robustly to composed music emulating unstructured works. Friedrich is a free spirit on drums, swelling the space with robust action, while Smith transfers his abundant knowledge and experience with improvisation into very complex compositions. Smithıs blowing is filled with vitality, and Alexanderıs string work is absorbing. Together with Friedrich, they offer a recording steeped in the open European esthetic but actively acknowledging the implicit spirit of American improvisation. To me, the criterion is satisfaction, and this set succeeds on that count.
